Multiple steps must be completed before a nurse can safely enter the profession. These steps typically include:

Graduating from a recognized nursing program,
Meeting the specific requirements of the state board of nursing, and
Passing the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) NCLEX examination for registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs).

Because passing the NCLEX is usually the final step in the nurse licensure process, the number of people passing the NCLEX (“pass rate”) is a good indicator of how many new nurses are entering the profession in the U.S.

The National Medical Admission Test (NMAT)

I used to be one of the proctors in the nationwide National Medical Admission Test or NMAT. NMAT is given to pre-med graduates in the Philippines who want to pursue their studies in the various fields of medicine. During my time, the NMAT was given by the Center for Educational Measurement and lasted for one whole day.

NMAT is not an easy test. It covers the entire fields of science – biology, physics, chemistry, botany, etc. The test is divided into two parts. The first part lasts for 4 hours while the other part, another 4 hours.

If you are set to take the NMAT, please take my suggestions. Be ready for a brain-whacking examination. Review everything that you know about science and medicine. While it is advisable to take your breakfast before taking the exam, please don’t eat too much. I remember one examinee vomiting while taking the test because he was bending his head for hours.

Take a good night’s sleep prior to the test and then get some exercise when you wake up in the morning. The NMAT does not only tests your intelligence, it also challenges you physical capabilities. Can you last for eight hours looking down at your paper and the questionnaire?

I will post the NMAT schedule here. But during my time, the NMAT was given twice a year – March and December. I’ll try to get in touch with my friends at CEM and ask them about the NMAT schedule.

Require identifying and selecting a particular area of a drawn body part pertaining to the question
Involve selecting multiple correct answers (via check box)
Calculating an answer for a mathematical question (usually for medication dosages) and inputting the answer
Arranging according to order a certain medical or nursing procedure (e.g. how to don sterile gloves or how to do a guiac test)

There are two types, the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN. NCLEX examinations are developed and owned by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN). NCSBN administers these examinations on behalf of its member boards which consist of the boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands.

To ensure public protection, each board of nursing requires a candidate for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEX examination, NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN for practical/vocational nurses. NCLEX examinations are designed to test the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry-level.

NCLEX examinations are provided in a computerized adaptive testing (CAT) format and are presently administered by Pearson VUE in their network of Pearson Professional Centers (PPC).
